Local Marketing – the new niche for internet online marketing

 Have you noticed how internet marketing front liners have found a new niche – local marketing.

Internet marketers are always on the lookout for new ideas. Over recent years with the globalization of almost everything, the emphasis has been on developing products that allow lead generation from any country in the world that has internet connection.  In particular lead generation software and systems for sales and business lead generation have been very successful.

The new trend is the result of a common problem – forgetting the fortune in your own back yard. The story is told of a man in Northern California who sold his property in order to finance his venture to find gold during the rush in Southern California. He found nothing. But the buyer of his property decided to dig up his new back yard and discovered gold!

So it has been interesting to watch how over recent weeks several online marketing entrepreneurs have launched products and sales training courses aimed at teaching how to offer internet marketing services to small business owners along “Main Street.”

The product innovators in this recently uncovered gold mine of providing internet marketing services and marketing training to local businesses imagine a triangle with a huge dollar sign in the middle. They’re not wrong.

One side of the triangle is labeled Advertising. Local businesses are always struggling with the budget needed to maintain the attention of their customer base. They’ve traditionally depended on direct mail advertising, local newspapers and TV which is becoming less effective and more expensive. The second side of the triangle is labeled Customers. These days, many more potential customers are searching online before physically going shopping or just prefer shopping online. They expect their local suppliers to have a website. The third side of the triangle is labeled Small Business Owner.  This might be the longest side of the triangle but it may also be the weakest because it assumes that most small business owners are internet marketing illiterate. So the new business opportunity is to provide internet marketing services and internet sales training to these businesses.

The assumption is surely correct to some extent and while it is still difficult to accurately gauge the size of the market, it is indeed large. As with any new trend, the quality and scope of the information and software packages being offered to internet marketers to exploit this opportunity will evolve. Those who get in early may find great success but there is really no need to panic. According to recent data, there over 25 million small businesses in the United States alone, so the market is not about to be flooded in the near future.
